MY STORY

Johnny Jennings is the former Chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), where he led one of the nation's largest police agencies after more than 30 years of service. Rising through the ranks in patrol, investigations, and executive leadership, he became Chief in 2020 and guided the department through a period of significant organizational transformation.

During his tenure, Jennings implemented the CORE 4 strategic framework, focused on crime management, employee wellness, professional accountability, and community collaboration. He also launched and expanded the nationally recognized CMPD Serves Program, the first formalized customer service curriculum in law enforcement, establishing department-wide standards for professionalism, empathy, and community engagement.

A strong advocate for employee wellness, Jennings expanded mental health and support resources for department personnel, helping institutionalize wellness as a cornerstone of operational readiness and service excellence. Under his leadership, CMPD achieved reductions in violent and property crime while strengthening community partnerships and proactive public safety efforts.

Jennings holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University and an MBA from Pfeiffer University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute for Police, and the FBI National Executive Institute. His numerous honors include the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, the Major Cities Chiefs Leadership Award, and the Charlotte Mayor's Harvey Gantt Award.

Today, Jennings is a sought-after speaker, consultant, and advisor on leadership, crisis management, organizational change, public safety strategy, and building trust in complex environments.
